BREEDING FOCUS
He says he has increasingly focused on breeding his own horses for competition. "It is becoming more difficult to scout good horses [speaking in December 2021], so luckily we started building our own breeding facility in time, often with mares that we know from the sport ourselves, so you know what the pluses and minuses are of the mare. You should want to know that, so that you can base your stallion choices on that. 20 years ago, breeding was much further removed from the sport. No rider thought of breeding. That is now completely different, just look at riders like Leon Thijssen and Willem Greve. The sport keeps you sharp - when you enter a Grand Prix on a Sunday, you know exactly what you need."
